  CULTURAL EXPLORATION

CULTURAL-EXPLORATION01-600.jpg

  ACTIVE ADVENTURE

Discover an insider’s view of some of the world’s most fascinating places and cultures through exciting, active, and challenging experiences. Trek through lava fields in Iceland’s Westfjords, navigate a boat through Australia’s Whitsunday Islands, hike across a glacier in the Swiss Alps, or strap on a pair of backcountry skis in snowy Patagonia. Explore some of the most spectacular and wild landscapes in the world, make lasting memories, try new things, and have fun.

  AUTHENTIC IMMERSION

Get off the beaten track and see the world as a traveler — not as a tourist. Live with a homestay family for a week on a New Zealand sheep farm, chat with monks in a golden temple in Thailand, or learn to cook a traditional Tuscan meal using ingredients you harvested the same day. Balance city experiences with small-town and rural living, and become a part of daily life in your chosen destination.

My husband traveled with Putney 25 years ago. He was thrilled to see that the quality of programming, leaders, and students drawn to Putney are just as great as they were back then.

  — Carolyn & Ray Evans,

  CREATIVE FOCUS

Delve deeper into place and culture through student-initiated independent projects. Use the streets of Dublin, Prague, or Havana as inspiration for a short story or poem; apprentice with a master gelato-maker in Italy; or document your visit to a santería temple in Cuba. Build on your talents, learn new skills and perspectives, engage with local people, and come home with a better understanding of our diverse and ever-changing planet.

  Alaska

Travel to the edge of the Arctic Circle and explore awe-inspiring landscapes during your student travel program in Alaska. Hear stories from a native Athabascan storyteller in Anchorage, hike the subarctic tundra of Denali National Park with expert guides, and don crampons and ice picks to trek across a glacier with a group of adventurous peers.

  Bhutan

Explore Bhutan, the world’s last Himalayan kingdom, where the Gross National Happiness index shapes governance, the natural environment is constitutionally protected, and Buddhism is integrated into everyday life. Trek to remote villages, learn to meditate with monks, and meet with national leaders to discuss the ways this country is accepting and resisting the forces of globalization.

  China

With a population consisting of 56 distinct ethnic groups, and landscapes ranging from dramatic mountain gorges to densely populated cities of skyscrapers and ancient pagodas, China is rich in cultural and ecological diversity. Immerse yourself in the country’s history and multiculturalism through your travels to Beijing, the Snow Mountains near the edge of Tibet, and the beaches and skyscrapers of Hong Kong.

  Cuba

Take a road trip across this colorful and complex island, from Havana east towards Santiago de Cuba, and witness history in the making as the long freeze in Cuba – U.S. relations begins to thaw. During your student travel in Cuba, connect with Cubans to learn firsthand about the Cuban Revolution, contemporary music, film, baseball, Hemingway, the Bay of Pigs invasion, sustainable agriculture, Cuban sports and culture, or the folk religion of Santería — all through direct people to people interaction.

  Costa Rica

Explore topics in conservation, local culture, Spanish language, and service in Costa Rica — Central America’s pioneer in sustainable ecotourism. From your base just down the road from the world-famous Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, dive into a variety of themes as you rotate through a series of hands-on workshops. End the program with two nights on Costa Rica’s pristine Pacific coastline — surfing by day and strolling the beach at dusk in search of nesting sea turtles.

  Fiji,New Zealand,&Australia

Immerse yourself in the culture and wonder of the South Pacific on this summer program for high school students to Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji. Experience the island paradise of Fiji, the alpine winter landscapes of New Zealand, and the rugged Outback and spectacular coral reefs of Australia. Go beyond the typical tourist experience and engage with places and cultures in exciting ways.

  Iceland

Join us for a two-week student travel adventure amid Iceland’s glaciers, lava fields, and dramatic fjords. Explore the remote and culturally rich Westfjords region by paddle and on foot as we kayak pristine waters and hike fields of wildflowers along the staggering coastline of the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve. Catch a live musical performance in Reykjavik’s acclaimed Harpa Music Hall, and enjoy a soak in the famous geothermal pool, the Blue Lagoon.

17.jpgIceland.jpg

  Skiing in Patagonia

Cool off your summer by heading south to explore the wilds of Patagonia on a winter student travel adventure to the “end of the world.” Immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of Buenos Aires, then venture toward the Antarctic Circle into the open, blue horizons of Patagonia. Explore the majestic power of azure glaciers descending from remote mountain peaks and ski and snowshoe through the peaceful, snow-covered forests of Tierra del Fuego near Cerro Castor.

  Switzerland,Italy,France,&Holland

From the mountain trails and summer snowfields of the Swiss Alps and the Italian Dolomites to the rich culture of Florence and Paris to the bike paths, cheese markets, and beaches of rural Holland, join us to experience Europe as an actively engaged traveler with a group of like-minded students. This is the original Putney Student Travel program, first led 66 years ago by founders George and Kitty Shumlin.

  Thailand,Laos,&Cambodia

From its famously delicious cuisine to its rich cultural and religious traditions and stunning landscapes, Southeast Asia has held a mythical fascination for travelers for centuries. Explore the diversity and magic of Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia as you trek through lush rainforests, learn about elephant conservation efforts, and bike alongside ancient ruins in iconic Angkor Wat. Cap your student travel in Southeast Asia with a relaxing stay on the white-sand beaches of Koh Samet.

  Writing in Ireland

Explore the Emerald Isle during your student travel in Ireland as you expand and refine your writing skills with a select group of passionate, like-minded peers. Under the guidance of published and acclaimed writers, write in historic taverns, medieval ruins, and overlooking the low-lying beaches of the mythical Irish Sea. Participate in Ireland’s lively storytelling tradition at readings, concerts, plays, city parks, and village taverns.
